Food Safety Spokane Regional Health District’s Food Safety Program protects public health by working with the food service industry and our community to prevent foodborne illness. In addition to food worker education and food establishment inspections, the Food Safety Program provides many other services, including investigation of complaints and illnesses associated with food establishments, plan review/pre-occupancy inspections of new or remodeled food establishments, and food safety consultations for permitted establishments. We also partner with community and food service representatives on our Food Advisory Committee, which provides guidance to our program. In addition, we work with local charities to meet the growing need for safe, nutritious food to feed the hungry and homeless.

Foodborne diseases take a major toll on health. Millions of people fall ill and many die as a result of eating unsafe food. Deeply concerned by this, WHO Member States adopted a resolution in 2000 to recognize food safety as an essential public health function. Food safety encompasses actions aimed at ensuring that all food is as safe as possible.

The Food Safety Information Council aims to reduce the number of Australians getting sick from food poisoning by providing simple, easy to follow consumer information on the handling, storage and preparation of food. The Australian Health Department estimates 5.4 million Australians get sick annually from eating food contaminated with bacteria or viruses. This figure is outrageously high considering Australia has one of the safest food supplies in the world due to effective working partnerships between food manufacturers, food handlers, retailers and government regulators. A good proportion of this figure is due to us, consumers, who mistreat or mishandle food.

CDFA oversees the safety of California's milk and milk products, it also assures that meat inspection not covered by USDA is safe. The Department works closely with many agricultural commodity groups to develop safe and efficient methods of food production via voluntary, proactive quality assurance programs. The U. S. food safety system is complex, being composed of many federal, state, and local stakeholders, including agriculture, health, and environmental agencies.

Kansas Food Safety
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), Bureau of Consumer Health, is responsible for licensing and inspecting approximately 10,300 food service establishments statewide. These food service establishments include restaurants, school meal sites and kitchens, senior meal sites and kitchens, special events, caterers, and mobile food units are regulated under the Kansas Food Code. The Kansas Food Code is adopted from the FDA Model Code and is based on nationally recognized scientific standards for food safety.
